Biostandards project

The project, which is a collaboration between the Nordic Innovation Centre and the Baltic Sea Region Energy Cooperation, is focused on the bioenergy area in the Baltic Sea region and aims to promote the development of standards for solid biofuels.

Full title: Market harmonisation by dissemination information on new solid biofuels

Aim: To increase the information flow relating to bioenergy standards in order to strengthen the market for bioenergy. During the project series of workshops on standardisation will be carried out aimed to disseminate results. Topics include standards for various parts of the bioenergy value chain, as well as, the role of standardisation in biofuel trade. In addition, the project regularly publishes newsletters focusing on issues related to standardisation.

Description of project activities: The project has organised two workshops in 2007 in St Petersburg and in Riga. The third project workshop is planned in June 2008 in Novgorod.

The project has published 2 newsletters, which are distributed to a contact network of 200 persons. The final newsletter will be published in October 2008.

A working group with participants from Finland, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands has been established to work on the classification of ash from solid biofuel and peat. The working group has held 2 meetings in 2007 and a third meeting is planned in April 2008.
